Big Lots taps Wurl to head merchandising

Columbus, Ohio - Closeout general merchandise chain Big Lots Inc. has made several organizational changes and named home veteran Doug Wurl executive vice president of merchandising.
Wurl was formerly at Sears Holding Corporation, where he was vp, gmm, business unit president, SHC Home Division. Prior to that, he was a svp, gmm with Shopko, and earlier held leadership roles at Macy's and May Co.
He will report to Steve Fishman, chairman, ceo and president. Wurl is responsible for Big Lots' merchandising organization and for furthering the scope of the company's global sourcing efforts. Reporting to him are: Bob Segal, svp and gmm; Steven Smart, svp and gm; Norm Rankin, svp of Big Lots Capital and Wholesale; and Charles Ellis, vp of global sourcing.
"We are extremely proud of our accomplishments within the merchandising arena and the profitable growth and shareholder value that has been created over the last five-plus years" said Fishman.
In addition, Big Lots promoted John Martin to evp, administration, assuming responsibility for store operations and human resources. He spent the past eight years heading Big Lots' merchandising and global sourcing teams.
