NEW YORK - Although the sales pace was uneven, same-store sales rose 2.2% during the second week of February, according to the Johnson Redbook.
Comps were up 2.7% in the department store sector and 1.9% among discounters.
"Sales during the week were driven by a combination of factors, including Valentine's Day promotions (candy, flowers, fashion accessories, cosmetics and jewelry) and continuing clearance of winter apparel," said Catlin Levis, Redbook analyst.
She added: "Valentine's Day is one day later than last year, pushing related sales into the subsequent fiscal week and prolonging related purchases."
