Same-store up despite unbalanced week

New York - Retailers reported mixed results last week, as the Johnson Redbook Retail Sales Index reported a 2.5% increase in same-store sales, up from 2.2% the prior week.
"Discount stores held up on their broader merchandise bases, suggesting sales driven by every day domestic demand in the absence of a clear seasonal or other trend," said Catlin Levis, Redbook analyst. "Stores reported modest business in Halloween merchandise."
Although the back-to-school season is essentially over, sales of school supplies and young apparel were better than anticipated last week, said Levis, "although profit margins have been hit by deep discounting."
