Shaw's Anso nylon earns SCS certification

HTT Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 6/1/2010 3:20:44 PM

Dalton, Ga. - Shaw Industries' "Anso nylon" has earned the Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) third-party certification of 25% system equivalent post-consumer recycled content.

SCS conducts independent certification of environmental, sustainability and "green" product claims. For Shaw, the certification is based on allocated output of recycled fiber material from the flooring company's Evergreen Nylon Recycling Facility as a percentage of total Anso nylon fiber output.

"Shaw is offering a unique product feature and advantage for our customers by certifying its post-consumer recycled content at a 25% level in our Anso nylon," said Rick Ramirez, Shaw's vp of sustainability. "This step forward further demonstrates our commitment to the cradle to cradle philosophy and credible third-party verification of our products' sustainability and environmental attributes."

The certification represents the second of its kind for Naso nylon, which is Shaw's premium carpet and rug fiber brand. Anso also received the "Cradle to Cradle" Silver certification from third-party product and design firm McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC).

Anso nylon products have contained post-consumer recycled content since June 2007. Shaw purchased the Anso nylon brand and the Evergreen Nylon Recycling facility from Honeywell International in 2005 and since then has made them "a cornerstone" of the company's sustainability commitment.

Ramirez explained that Shaw's post-consumer carpet reclamation and recycling "is a core element of Shaw's commitment to growth and sustainability through innovation - the Shaw Green Edge," and the recent SCS certification "reinforces Shaw's commitment toward incorporating sustainability goals in eco product design, materials recovery, energy stewardship and overall environmental and corporate social responsibility."
