May Comps Holding Up

Same-store sales were running slightly ahead of target at the end of the second week in May, rising 2.9%, the Johnson Redbook reported last week..

Month-over-month, comps gained 0.7% compared to April, slipping past a target of 0.6%.

“The week's results were also helped by a poor department store performance in the year-ago period, which boosted percentage gains,” said Caltin Levis, Rebook analyst.

Warm weather categories showed traction during the week, and some retailers saw home appliance sales pick up as consumers cashed on a government rebate program for energy-efficient appliances, she said.
