United Feather & Down Deal Extends Portico into Hospitality

-- Home Textiles Today, 5/10/2010 12:00:00 AM

Portico Home will make its hospitality debut at the HD Expo in Las Vegas, which begins May 19.

Utility bedding manufacturer United Feather & Down has signed with Portico Home to sell and distribute the organic cotton hospitality line utility bedding, fashion bedding and bath.

Home Source International remains the licensee for Portico Home fashion bedding and bath programs directed to retail.

“Many of the hospitality opportunities are going to be with the interior designers who are hired by the hotel developers rather than the buying services,” said Gregg Haft, Portico president. United Feather & Down, he added, “is already established in that space. They have the relationships.”

Giving the full home textiles range to one supplier gives hospitality a one-stop solution, he added. The luxury hospitality sector not only wants known brands, “they are really going green,” he said.

Other brand extensions are in the works. Portico is now talking with potential licensees in furniture, mattresses and baby products, aiming to settle agreements by the end of the year, he said.

The expansion comes on the heels of a big consumer awareness push. Last month during her Earth Day show, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres featured Portico fashion bedding, which was among organic products featured on her website for 30 days afterward. Also on Earth Day, New York news station WPIX visited a local Bed Bath & Beyond store to peruse its eco-friendly offerings, with an on-camera shot of Portico as part of the report.

Portico has also put together videos featuring brand ambassador Summer Rayne Oaks, which can be used for in-store promotion as well as on retail websites.

In addition, Portico is moving to develop a “level one” Portico collection that will be exclusive to boutiques and higher end department stores, said Haft.
