Paris – Carrefour today reported a boost in first quarter sales, and overall comps grew for the first time in 18 months.
Consolidated sales for the quarter rose 5.5% to €24 billion, or approximately $32.56 billion US at a constant value.
In its home country, which accounts for 41% of sales, overall comps rose 1.8%, but sales of non-food merchandise in hypermarkets fell 8.0%, the company reported. Comps in the remainder of Western Europe (together 25% of total sales) slipped 2.4%.
But in Latin America, comps jumped 10.1%, and same-store sales in China were up 4.5%.
The French conglomerate now operates more than 15,500 stores in 45 countries.
“This performance reflects the heightened attractiveness of the Carrefour brand, our strengthened commercial dynamics and the acceleration of growth in emerging markets, notably in Latin America and China,” said Lars Olofsson, ceo and board member.
