Target taps designer Todd Oldham

Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 9/10/2001 12:00:00 AM

Chalk up another one for the fashionistas at the Target Stores discount chain. The company last week bagged outré couture designer Todd Oldham, who will create an exclusive line of home merchandise slated to hit stores in summer 2002.

The home line will echo the design sensibility displayed in Oldham's women's fashion collections, which are known for over-the-top prints and bold use of color.

"Target and I have very similar views about what's important in design," Oldham said. "We both believe that consumers crave design that's smart and interesting, while at the same time is accessible and affordable."

The Oldham deal is yet another move on Target's part to create house brands redolent with hipster cachet. Oldham becomes the second designer to lend his name to Target-exclusive merchandise. Also coming next year will be a line from contemporary designer Philippe Starck. Last year the retailer unveiled a line of apparel created in collaboration with Mossimo Giannulli.

Target did not disclose what types of products Oldham will design. Target Stores president Gregg Steinhafel noted that the partnership "exemplifies Target's commitment to product innovation and making good design affordable."
