Kohl’s basks in South Florida with new openings

By Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 10/2/2008 1:20:00 PM

Miami – Kohl’s introduced itself to South Florida shoppers for the first time this week with a wave of new units in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.

One of the sites here, located in the Miami suburb of Kendall, seemed to maintain a standard Kohl’s plan-o-gram and product assortment, as well as marketing ploys. Three store associates greeted a few dozen shoppers this morning with a 15% discount on all purchases today with the opening of a new Kohl’s credit card account.

At the center of the home department – spanning all bedding and bath textiles categories as well as hardline decorative accessories and a plentiful kitchen utensil and gadget area – was a display bed dressed in the Signature Key pattern under the Simply Vera by Vera Wang collection. Its components were on sale, with the comforter set slashed by 30% -- to $249.99 from $359.99. On that same note, the bath coordinate collection was also reduced by 30% -- the shower curtain down to $48.99 down from $69.99.

Nearby were three other bed displays – most of them marked at sale prices. The Hotel by Park Avenue comforter set was reduced to $149.99 from $249.99 and the Chaps Leighton was also on sale – sheet sets priced at $79.99 vs. the regular $119.99 and comforter sets at $249.99 down from $359.99.

The apt. 9 bed ensemble, however, seemed to be regularly priced, at $59.99 and $219.99 for sheet sets and comforter sets, respectively. Only the apt. 9 reversible comforter showed a price cut – 50% down to $79.99.

Interestingly, Miami’s own homegrown Cuban-American celebrity – Daisy Fuentes – was pushed to the back seat, positioned on shelving behind Vera’s Signature bed. Daisy’s 300-count sheet sets were on sale for $99.99 and so were her comforter sets, at $269.99.

Advertised “Bonus Buys” in bedding included 1,000-count cotton sateen “luxury” sheet sets for $99.99 and generic beach towels, which were slashed by 45% to $12.09 -- despite the fact that in South Florida this category is not seasonal but year-round.

Table linens sets comprised of one tablecloth and eight matching napkins were 40% off at $23.99, while Food Network branded kitchen towel sets – three-packs of terry towels – were reduced to $9.09 from $12.99.
