JCP moves into Manhattan for the first time in 107-year history

Plano, Texas – For the first time in the mid-tier department store retailer’s 107-year history, JCPenney is moving into Manhattan.

On July 31, the more than 1,100-unit nationwide chain will host a grand opening celebration of its newest location at 33rd Street and Sixth Avenue, at the newly renovated Manhattan Mall, situated in New York City’s Herald Square area.

It will be in the company of Macy’s flagship store, located at the corner of 34th Street and Seventh Avenue, as well as many other fashion retailers nearby – many of them with stores along 34th Street, considered a shopping hub of the city.

The 13,000-square-foot store expects to serve “an enormous customer base that includes local residents, commuters, business travelers and tourists,” the retailer said, and JCP will build on the strengths of its other New York City stores located in Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.

JCP described this milestone as “a century in the making.” Although JCP maintained its corporate office in Manhattan from 1914 to 1988, this new store is a first.

“It took more than a hundred years for JCPenney to get to Manhattan, and now more than ever, the time is right,” said Mike Ullman, chairman and ceo. “Our company today has the financial strength to create a unique and inviting store in the heart of New York City, and with our assortment of great brands, we will offer Manhattan shoppers the style they want at affordable prices.”

The two-level store is accessible from street level as well as directly from two of the city’s transportation terminals -- the 34th Street-Herald Square subway station, and the 33rd Street PATH train station, where together more than 250,000 people pass through daily.

Additionally, the store is also one block from Penn Station.

“The entire store team is energized to take part in this milestone achievement for our company,” said store manager Joe Cardamone, who most recently managed the Bronx JCPenney store. “With our merchandise, store environment and services, we have created a new department store experience tailored to the needs of the Manhattan customer – the people who live, work and visit here.”
