Cotton gains bigger share of fabrics

NEW YORK -Cotton's share of the total home fabrics market reached a new high of 64.5 percent for 2000, up 1.3 percent over the previous year.
Cotton's market share has been increasing over the past four years, when the share was 60.7 percent in 1997.
Additional consumer data provided by NPD Group shows unit sales for sheets, pillow cases, sheet sets, blankets, quilt/comforters, mattress covers, pillows and tablecloths/napkins also has increased. Significant increases include the share for sheets at 70.8 percent, versus a 1997 share of 63.3 percent and mattress covers at 37.3 percent in '97 compared with a 44.8 percent share in '00.
Cotton's share of the towel market has remained at 96 percent over the four-year period.
