By Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 1/28/2008 12:00:00 AM

Neighborhood discount chain Dollar General has named veteran drug chain and supermarket executive Richard Dreiling its ceo.

Dreiling was most recently chairman, president and ceo of the largest drug store operator in New York City, Duane Reade. He previously was an exec at Safeway and Longs Drug Stores.

"He believes in the brand and understands what it means to our customers, and he will ensure we maintain the business and financial discipline necessary to take Dollar General to the next level," said Mike Calbert, Dollar General chairman, and a member of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., which led the investment group that took DG private last July in a transaction valued at about $7.3 billion.

David Bere, president and coo of 8,000-store Dollar General who served as interim ceo, will continue to serve the company as president and coo.
