Jaipur earns certification for workplace and human rights standards

-- Home Textiles Today, 5/5/2009 10:13:00 AM

Atlanta – Area and accent rug house Jaipur Rugs’ facility at its headquarters in India has been certified to the Social Accountability International SA 8000 Workplace and Human Rights standards.

The certification covers Jaipur’s factory, which works with more than 40,000 people across the country.

The facility also conducts various on-site awareness and training programs, and works with the Indian government on social initiatives.

Asha Chaudhary, ceo, said she is “pleased that our production facility in India has made an ongoing commitment to supporting and promoting best practices in labor standards in our production facility. We feel this is a necessary step as we continue to expand the Jaipur brand in new and exciting directions."

SA 8000 is an internationally recognized standard based on International Labor Organization (ILO) conventions and the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on Rights of the Child. The standard focuses on child labor, forced labor, health and safety, freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining, discrimination, disciplinary practices, working hours, compensation and the implementation of an efficient management system.
