Home Categories Sizzle at Ross Stores

Home was one of two leading departments in the third quarter, said Ross Stores vice chairman, president and ceo Michael Balmuth on the company's conference call recently, as the 798-store off-price retailer reported earnings per share of $0.31, up 24% from $0.25 for the same period one year ago.

Sales reached $1.36 billion, up 10% from $1.24 for the same period one year ago. Comp-store sales were up 4% over a year-ago comp gain of 9%.

"Home and shoes remained the top-performing merchandise categories," said Balmuth, adding that both categories realized "comps in the high-single to low-double digits" for the quarter.
