Dollar General Debuts Online Holiday Solutions Center

With Christmas around the corner, Dollar General launched a new Web section that offers gift ideas, recipes, holiday planning advice, and how-to information on subjects including wrapping and decorating.

“This is another tool we’re providing to help our customers plan ahead and stretch their resources farther during the holidays,” said Todd Vasos, chief merchandising officer.

More than 400 holiday items are featured on the site and are searchable by price and category.

Overstock.com Adds New International Markets

Internet retailer Overstock.com has begun selling and shipping to Mexico, China, Japan, India, South Korea, Taiwan and New Zealand.

The company now sells into 41 countries and plans to expand to more than 90 by the end of this year.

“International markets are underserved by online retail,” said Patrick Byrne, chairman and ceo. “The time has never been better for international customers to buy American goods, creating a great opportunity for us.”

International customers see pricing displayed in their our currency, and the site shifts prices in pace with currency fluctuations.

Wal-Mart to Analysts: There’s No Competition

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. president and ceo Mike Duke sounded familiar themes as he told analysts no other company in the world can expand the way it can over the next few years.

“There is no retail competitor — here in the United States or anywhere in the world — that can deliver the kind of growth that Walmart can over the next several years,” Duke said during the company’s 16th Annual Meeting for the Investment Community earlier this month.

Executives from the $401 billion retailer have been assuring analysts about Wal-Mart’s growth prospects long before the retail chain hit its first $100 billion sales mark.

“Each operating segment has a long-term plan to improve ROI [return on investment],” said Duke. “We plan to continue to produce significant free cash flow, which will drive our ROI performance and deliver greater shareholder value.”

Sears’ Black Friday Sweepstakes Exclusive to Facebook Users

Sears has launched a contest on Facebook that will award $500 gift cards as well as a chance for 25 VIP winners to shop for Black Friday specials ahead of the general public.

“Facebook is a natural way for us to reach our loyal customers and 'fans’ to reward them with an exclusive opportunity and fun way to shop and take advantage of Sears Black Friday Deals,” said Don Hamblen, Sears’ chief marketing officer.
