Consumers looking for some R-E-S-P-E-C-T

By Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 11/5/2003 12:00:00 AM

New York — Consumers are feeling like Rodney Dangerfield these days — they can’t get no respect.

That’s the finding of the recent Pulse Survey by WSL Strategic Retail, which reports that the percentage of consumers who feel respected at the stores they shop is a low 49 percent. There is little degree of variation by income bracket, age or ethnic status, according to the study.

The good news: shoppers feel much better about how they are treated at home furnishings specialty stores, the survey found. Satisfaction in the channel among consumers under age 35 was 79 percent; among shoppers age 35-54 the figure was 75 percent, and shoppers over age 55, 67 percent. Home furnishing specialty stores also fared well across income brackets, with 70 percent positive readings in households earning under $50,000; 78 percent in households between $50,000 to $100,000; and 81 percent in households earning more than $100,000.
