Retailers jump the gate on Black Friday

New York – Black Friday may be four days away, but some retailers are firing the starting gun early.
Amazon.com this morning announced that a number of post-Thanksgiving deals are available today at www.amazon.com/blackfriday.
"There’s no need to fight crowds for parking spaces or to stand in long check-out lines just to try and get a handful of deals on devices that might not have the features you really want," said Paul Ryder, Amazon.com vice president of electronics.
Dollar General today said its three-day holiday sale will begin at 7 a.m. on Thankgiving Day. All of the company’s stores will do business from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the holiday.
"We know saving time and money is important to our customers, especially around the holidays," said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and ceo.
Walmart reported today that it will offer special online deals on Thanksgiving Day featuring nearly 50 items marked at up to 40% off. The in-store sale kicks off at 5 a.m. on Friday.
"We created a whole weekend of unprecedented savings online and in stores, and now [mom] can breathe a little easier knowing she doesn't have to compromise to give her family the Christmas they deserve," said John Fleming, Walmart U.S. chief merchandising officer.
Target will also open its doors at 5 a.m. on Black Friday, and during the first seven hours of the day will award a $10 gift card when a shopper purchases $100 in merchandise. Today Target also announced it will hold sweepstakes from Nov. 22 to Nov. 26 for of $200,000 worth of gift cards. One grand-prize winner will receive $10,000, and an additional $10,000 will go to the school of his or her choice.
