Paris – French retailer Carrefour SA unveiled plans to open a discount format – Carrefour Discount – in May to gain business from budget-conscious consumers.
This new format will be stocked with “everyday essentials at very low prices” comprising more than 400 food and non-food products such as household goods and personal care products, the company said in a statement.
The retailer – which as of December 2008 operated 8,006 Carrefour units combined throughout Europe, three countries in South America and seven in Asia –said this format is its “way of addressing the current economic worries of consumers and of winning over new customers. In today’s tough economic environment, Carrefour wants to provide consumers with a tailor-made solution for keeping a grip on spending on everyday needs while offering the support of a national brand.”
Carrefour Discount, the company added, “complements the existing portfolio” of Carrefour brand products.
