Manville Works to Change Bergdorf's Script

“We don't sell fabric, and we never worked with a fabric house before,” was the dilemma facing Bergdorf Goodman's Nicholas Manville as he sought to bring the Paule Marrot fabric designs on to the store's decorative home floor.
But Manville, who was smitten by the designs of Marrot, one of the 20th century's leading decorative artists, first thought of a decorative pillow program “but it seemed too small for a project. We loved the fabric — the color obviously. And she had a way doing floral design that was fresh and new but with the old overtones. She was ahead of her time with that heritage.”
The solution — a collection of vintage chairs and settees upholstered in the Paule Marrot fabrics from Brunschwig & Fils, the American licensee. The 11 pieces are installed in a main hall presentation, “perfect for spring,” said Manville.
Bergdorf changes its main hall presentation every six to eight weeks, and the Marrot covered pieces will be shown in six color segments through June 24 — ahead of the fabric collection's American debut. Brunschwig launches its major new Marrot collection in the fall, he said.
The chairs and settees in the vintage one-of-a-kind Marrot covers range from $5,500 to $14,500.
