Sales slower in April’s final week

New York – Retail same-store sales were up 0.3% during the fourth week of April following a 0.7% increase the prior week, the Johnson Redbook reported today.
“Sales slowed down during the latest week amid concern about the Swine Flu, which may have kept shoppers at home,” said Catlin Levis, Redbook analyst. “Meanwhile, other retailers said warm weather supported seasonal sales such as apparel, lawn and garden equipment and sporting goods.”
Discounters beat Redbook’s target of a 4.9% gain for the month with a 5.2% climb in comps. Department stores did slightly better than the 7.2% decline forecast by the research firm, turning in a 7.1% decline. Month-over-month, comps rose 1.5% compared to March. April comps were up 0.5% compared to April 2008.
May is a four-week month containing two major shopping events: Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. Redbook is targeting a year-over-year gain of 0.3% and a month-over-month rise of 0.5%.
