| SALES UP, PROFITS SLIDE: In a clearly focused snapshot of what's going on in the industry, worker productivity, spurred by constant cost-cutting and head-count reduction, improved modestly, to an average $156.20 of sales for every worker from $154.90 in 2000. But with so many companies leaking red ink, income per employee worsened substantially, with the 10 companies in this year's sample reporting an average loss of $40.90 per worker, almost 10 times as steep as the year-before loss of $4.10 per worker. | ||||||
