Scala's beds dress for evening

By Andrea Lillo -- Home Textiles Today, 4/14/2003 12:00:00 AM

Bedding can now transfer easily from a day look into evening through new bed overlays introduced at spring market by Scala International.

"You throw it on, and it completely changes the atmosphere of the bed," said Chip Scala, president. Made of silk, the overlays use color and embroideries to glamorize the bed, and received a positive reaction from retailers, he added.

The Bed Dressing collection is the first introduction by designers Anne Bertsch and Fran Shenker, who came up with the concept because "they felt bedding should be changeable. It's a nice international look for us," Scala said. "Anne and Fran have taken a fresh look at home furnishings. It's whimsical, but also high styled."

Bed Dressing falls into four stories. Patches centers on the color red and includes a silk quilt; the Rosebud group is based on purple; Wedding Day is an all-white ensemble; and Crushed Silk has a golden touch. All have coordinating quilts, duvets, window and throws. A queen-size overlay wholesales for approximately $120, while a solid-color queen quilt is $80 and the Patches silk quilt is $110.

Besides the Bed Dressing group, Scala debuted the quilt patterns "circles" and "pompoms" to its washable silk group, as well as Gridwork, a polished cotton solid reversible ensemble in eight colors.
