Mohawk set to construct additional plant

Facility will be part of consolidation effort

Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 6/28/2004 12:00:00 AM

Mohawk Home later this year will break ground on its seventh finishing and distribution facility, with completion slated for the end of 2005.

Merle Johnson, vice president of marketing, said the company is creating the new site — which will serve primarily for the finishing and distribution of area rugs — for its textiles division in order to "consolidate some of our distribution centers for future growth potential and be more flexible in our manufacturing."

The new Mohawk Home facility is one of two to be built in Calhoun, Ga., on the same acreage and next to an existing Mohawk Industries 800-square-foot distribution center for broadloom products.

The second facility is being made for the production of hardwood flooring, which the company said is a growing business.

Together, the new facilities cover 1.3 million square feet. The company would not say how much of that square footage will be devoted to area rugs and how much will be for hardwood production. Both sites will also be outfitted with state-of-the-art technology and equipment, including RFID capabilities, stated Mohawk.

Once completed, the company stated that the two sites combined will create 140 new manufacturing- and distribution-related jobs.
