Lichtenberg Buried at West Point

-- Home Textiles Today, 11/9/2009 12:00:00 AM

Services were held Oct. 30 for Herbert Lichtenberg, 76, who died Oct. 27 of cancer.

At his death he was president of S. Lichtenberg, a post he held for more than 40 years.

Following a full military funeral at West Point, where he graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1955, Lichtenberg was buried at the West Point Cemetery. Both Herbert, known to all as Herbie, and his brother Alan, were graduates of West Point — Herbert in 1955, Alan in 1951. He joined the company founded in 1933 by his father Sam in 1958.

Both Herbert and Alan, who died in 2003, were dedicated alumni of West Point and spearheaded the funding for the West Point Jewish Chapel Fund. That resulted in the opening of the Jewish Chapel of West Point in 1984. The Lichtenberg Tennis Center and Class of 1955 Coaches Housing area also were spearheaded by his efforts. In 2006, he was cited by the West Point Association of Graduates as a distinguished graduate of the USMA and also the Order of Aaron and Hur.

The home textiles industry awarded the brothers the Marvin Rosenberg Citizen of the Year Award in 1988, and earlier they received the Dean of the Industry Award.

Lichtenberg is survived by his wife, Trudy, sons Michael and Scott, both company vps, and five grandchildren.
