Pantone '06 Calls for Sophistication

Carlstadt, N.J. — Noting that “color and fashion trends will be more sophisticated across the board,” Lenore Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, has divided the home furnishings forecast for 2006 into three major segments.
The most significant fashion-forward direction is the luxury area, which Eiseman calls “a sophisticated, uptown look.” In a more mainstream trend projection is “downtown,” a fun and funky look, and then “out of town,” a direction that is more bucolic or exotic.
“There is no one-size-, color- and trend-fits-all anymore,” Eiseman emphasized. “There no longer are any formulaic combinations,” but more intricate and original directions for home furnishings. In all, there are 76 forecast colors among eight palettes.
In what she terms the “luxury uptown pathway,” two color palettes stand out as most directional. “Stiletto is very sophisticated and minimalist,” she said. It reflects high fashion with poised and polished urbane settings reminiscent of the “moderne” motifs of the Art Deco era. Think glamorous combinations and metallic tones, she said.
Here, Champagne Beige, Pirate Black, Heliotrope, Pale Gold and Silver are among the nine forecast colors.
Working in yet a more elegant but updated mood is Renaissance, also part of the “uptown” segment. This trend has gone away from all the embellishments and furbellos. It's an eclectic mix of Old World and New Age, she explained. Look for a rococo chandelier with a simple sofa or a classic chair covered in a contemporary texture.
Peach Beige, Mellow Mauve, Almondine, True Navy, Blackberry Wine and Pale Gold are among the 10 forecast colors in this segment.
More mainstream is “out-of-town” paced by Pique-Nique which provides a festive, fun and colorful approach mixed with a bit of rustic and a new casual approach, Eiseman related. But while mainstream, “It is still sophisticated and organic — as much about texture as color.”
Other trend segments include Grounded, a mood that connects with nature while offering security and reality with earthtones that are not typical suggesting minerals, ores, stones and striated rock formations, and Romantic Notions, a “downtown” direction where the look is fun, “not too serious,” with combinations of color like bright bits of confetti. “Downtown” directions are geared to young families or singles breaking a lot of rules and leaning toward the funky side.
Paradisio, another “out-of-town” trend uses exotic destinations with colors derived from sun-drenched skies and seafoams. Another “out-of-town” direction is Primitif, inspired by handicrafts and artifacts, symbols and statuary — “some highly embellished, others deceptively simple,” Eiseman pointed out. Pastille offers a comfort level of quiet understatement with serene pastels juxtaposed against unexpected neutral tones or happy hues.
