New York – As consumers prepared for Thanksgiving and started their holiday shopping, same-store sales during the third week of November rose 2.8% compared to a year ago, the Johnson Redbook reported today.
Compared to the same period last month, comps climbed 4.8%.
Once again, discounters took the lead, with comps up 5.3%, largely on the strength of food and pre-Thanksgiving promotions. Department store comps fell 1.2%, an improvement over the prior two weeks, as consumers shopped for apparel and seasonal merchandise.
“Several retailers reported an improvement in the last few days of the week, especially over the weekend, which had generated positive momentum for the final week of the month,” said Catlin Levis, Redbook analyst.
“As the holiday season gets underway in earnest, the two days following Thanksgiving typically are the busiest period of the entire year,” she added.
