GLM unveils Surtex 2001 student awards

Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 3/19/2001 12:00:00 AM

WHITE PLAINS, NY -GLM has announced the winners of the Surtex 2001 International Student Design Competition, who were selected from a record 162 entries.

In keeping with this year's theme, "Celebrate," students were challenged to create surface designs for a variety of products celebrating an occasion of their choice-for example, birthday, wedding, graduation, holiday, etc.-for a fictional client. Winners were chosen by a jury of professionals selected from the design industry and trade press.

First prize went to Denise Dye, from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, Scotland, for her "let's party!" design for a birthday or other festive celebration, targeting a female adolescent market.

As the first prize winner, Dye will receive a $500 cash award and a trip to Surtex 2001, including airfare, hotel accommodations and a one-week internship with the design industry.

The second prize went to Nadia Williams, from Parsons School of Design in New York, for her design on a Kwanzaa celebration, incorporating a variety of patterned designs inspired by American motifs, cultural symbols and adornments. Williams will receive $250 for her award.

The winning and honorable mention entries will be on display during the 16th annual edition of Surtex, which will take place on May 20 to 22, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York.
