Menomonee Falls, Wis. – With the opening of 46 stores today, mid-tier retailer Kohl’s Department Stores has reached the 1,000-unit milestone, and has reached its 48th state – Montana – and entered the greater Miami market for the first time.
Of the 47 new locations this fall (one will open in November), 45 stores were built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) pre-certified Silver level, the company said.
“This is an exciting time for our company as we celebrate the opening of our 1,000th store and our green buildings,” said Kevin Mansell, Kohl’s President and ceo.
Kohl’s now has more than 100 stores that have earned the Energy Star label for energy efficiency; the company also said it is “the largest retail host of solar power” worldwide, with a distributed solar program across six states in the U.S.
In 2009, Kohl’s plans to open about 50 new stores and remodel 60 locations, up from 36 remodels this year.
Kohl’s is No.5 on the HTT Top 50 Retailing Giants, with 2007 home textiles sales of $1.16 billion.
