Amazon goes back to school
Amazon.com is stepping up its commitment to back-to-school this year, with a strong emphasis on flannel bedding as well as extra-long twin sheets.
"We plan to stay in-stock year-round" on the sheets, said Glenn Cunningham, director of home and garden.
Because so much of back-to-school merchandise traditionally focuses on rock-bottom price points, the season has not fit into Amazon's better/best grid, he said. However, as the retailer works to expand its home offerings — now at 1 million skus — it's also decided to carve out its own piece of the back-to-school market.

Ikea recruitment fair promotes balance
To underscore its work/life balance philosophy, Ikea will hold a job fair in Tempe, Ariz., at a resort.
The July 24 fair — at which Ikea will be scouting to fill 400 store- and warehouse-related positions — will offer free childcare, a lunch coupon to the first 100 qualified job applicants and a drawing for a free weekend at the Pointe South Mountain Resort, where the fair is taking place.
"We realize that people have hectic schedules and extensive commitments that can make it extremely challenging to pursue a career opportunity," said Joseph Roth, the retailer's director of expansion public affairs. The Tempe fair is intended to make the job hunt process "a little easier to juggle, as well as a fun day out, which is what our Ikea stores are all about," he said.
