Natori Taps Turkish, Eastern Influences

By Carole Sloan -- Home Textiles Today, 9/29/2008 12:00:00 AM

New York — Josie Natori is tapping into the East and West for inspiration for her bedding and decorative textile accessories for spring 2009.

The new collection of four beds reflect the influence of the Grand Bazaar and Topkapi Palace in Istanbul as well as the steppes along the Silk Road. Looks range from the zen to the exotic, with uniquely embellished decorative pillows, decorative shawls and throws.

For the coming season, Natori Home focuses on five new colors in the line's palette: cerise, cinnabar, Turkish gold, Turkish blue and plum. Key dimensional interest is found in pleated origami, tuxedo origami and pintuck origami throughout the collection.

The collection is focused on Natori bamboo — a blend of fine cotton and bamboo in a jacquard design — the core fabric in Companions, the solid color base cloth of four colors that this season adds Majolica blue for 2009.

The four new beds include Topkapi Palace, which mixes cerise and cinnabar, accented by deep plums and pearl. The coverlet uses Natori bamboo in a jacquard weave and quilted in intricate patterns derived from ikats.

Vientiane features a duvet woven of silk and cotton with a traditional Laotian geometric that blends blues into grayed violets, and is highlighted by pearl and silver. The Steamer blanket is woven of bamboo, and a bed shawl of Natrori silk features an origami like texture.

L'Ombre features color ranging from light to dark in soft gold, to warm pearl to sliver gray in a hand-quilted coverlet. Bukhara is a print on a textured ottoman weave of medallions filled with stylized lotus and scrolls, which reverses to two-colored ikat.
