Springs announces “Brave and Beautiful” contest winners, donates $10,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure

Rock Hill, S.C. -- Representatives from Springs Creative Products Group LLC (SCPG) announced that Mary Buckley Sutton from Johnson City, Tenn. has won first place in the “Brave and Beautiful Design Challenge”.

And in honor of the design challenge, SCPG donated $10,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

SCPG, in conjunction with Hancock Fabrics, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Creative Home Arts, launched the “Brave and Beautiful Design Challenge” in October 2009. To participate, crafters purchased an Anne’s Collection cloche hat from Hancock Fabrics and then personalized it using a variety of embellishments.

Contest entrants’ hats were judged on originality, creativity and workmanship.

Sutton’s design, which earned her a $500 award, was adorned in shades of hot pink and black and featured a zebra motif with more than 60 hand-sewn aurora borealis rhinestones, vintage feathers and veiling.

In second place came Linda Gorrick, from Brooklyn Park, Maryland, who was awarded $250. Her hat featured a large pink breast cancer awareness ribbon adorned with pink chiffon, sequins, pearl accents and a pale pink feather.

Six participants – Yvette Lynette Lax from Dallas, Heather Poer from Concord, N.C., Katrina and Alexis Spangler from Charlotte, N.C., Elise Dee Beraru from Lynchburg, Va., Sharon Panozzo from Peotone, Ill., and Judy Janes from Greer, S.C. – were each awarded a $25 honorable mention prize.

“We were blown away by the level of creativity shown by the ‘Brave and Beautiful Challenge’ participants,” said Cynthia McCloskey, merchandising director, SCPG. “This competition was an excellent opportunity for crafters across the country to showcase their creative talents by personalizing a hat from Anne’s Collection for a friend or family member affected by cancer. We would like to thank all of those who participated in this great event and congratulate the winners.”
