High Point, NC — In a first step in establishing manufacturing and distribution operations in China, fabric producer Culp Inc. has leased a 65,000-square-foot facility near Shanghai, China.
The operation will add finishing to fabric designed by Culp and sourced from Chinese manufacturers. The facility will also will provide quality control testing and fabric inspection that meet U.S. standards.
"This strategic initiative will enable us to integrate Chinese-sourced goods with our domestic line and allow us to expand our business with middle to higher-end fabrics," said Robert Culp, chairman and ceo.
The facility plans to start production with approximately 30 employees by Nov. 1, 2003, with as many as 150 employees when running at full capacity.
Culp has also created a separate U.S.-based design group dedicated to fabric produced in China.
Michael Messer was named vp, general manager, Chinese operations. Most recently he was vp, manufacturing, Culp Decorative Fabrics division. Thomas Sibley was named product manager. Previously he was regional sales manager, contract fabrics.
