Merino Company becomes licensee of EU Eco-label  ‘Flower’

-- Home Textiles Today, 10/14/2009 10:59:00 AM

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia – Natural fiber source The Merino Company (TMC) has become a licensee the EU Eco-label “Flower,” marking it as the world’s first fully certified EU Eco-label wool supply chain, “from greasy wool through to yarn.”

Established in 1992, the EU Eco-label “Flower” is a certification scheme that identifies greener and more environmentally friendly products and services.

“We recognize the importance placed on high quality natural fibers that are environmentally friendly by our global retail, apparel and textile brand customers,” said Stefan Bernerius, manager of TMC Yarns. “It has been a rigorous process and has taken over two years to come to fruition, but we have met the strict EU Eco-label environmental and performance criteria, and can proudly guarantee that our products have a reduced impact on the environment.”

He added that TMC sources superfine merino through to crossbred wool from woolgrowers who meet the EU requirements for sustainable on farm practices. All wool is independently tested for chemical residue. The scouring, carding, combing, spinning, and TEC (Total Easy Care) treatment is done using EU Eco-label approved biodegradable products, and all effluent is independently tested to ensure there is no harmful outflow into waterways.

“We have seen significant growth from interior textile customers since developing this eco or low impact supply chain,” Bernerius said.

Licensed customers who purchase any of TMC’s EU Eco-label certified products are entitled to use the EU Eco-label “Flower” symbol to help customers identify such products as environmentally friendly.
