Christmas Week Sales on Target

Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 1/4/2010 12:00:00 AM

Most retailers made plan Christmas week, and same-store sales rose 3.0%, the Johnson Redbook reported last week.

Comps rose 1.9% compared to December 2008, missing a 2.1% target, and fell 4.5% compared to November.

Discounters had a robust week, with comps climbing 5.5%. Department stores saw a slight decline in comps, which dropped 0.8%.

"Retailers said most business was done on the 24th and 26th, the days immediately before and after Christmas," said Caltin Levis, Rebook analyst.

"Cold weather merchandise, which had been slow all month, began to move faster," she added. "The primary focus during the fourth week was on holiday seasonal business, dominated by gift and holiday categories, including toys, electronics and jewelry."
