Recycled fiber maker Teijin brings first product to market, will look to home eventually

-- Home Textiles Today, 3/31/2009 12:28:00 PM

New York – Teijin, a multinational corporation based in Japan, today unveiled its first Eco-A-Wear product entering the U.S. market.

The line of suits are made using Teijin’s Ecopet fibers processed from recycled PET bottles and will debut this May at Sears under the Covington label. Teijin teamed with apparel maker Bagir to incorporate fiber technology that makes the suits machine washable. Constructions include blends as well as 100% polyster – the latter of which can be recycled back into fiber through Teijin’s Eco Circle production program.

Teijin is talking to several other companies about incorporating its fiber, according to Moses Cohen, sales and marketing manager. Product areas it will pursue include home furnishings, rugs and carpets, the auto industry, awnings and uniforms.

The Ecopet manufacturing includes tracing the production process from the collection of plastic bottles through the lot in which the finished fibers are used.

“Whoever wants certification, we have it,” said Cohen.
