Winner, finalists announced for Raymond Waites Design Competition

-- Home Textiles Today, 4/13/2010 8:17:00 AM

High Point, N.C. – Bradley James Yandow, the winner of the first Raymond Waites Design Competition, will be honored here along with 10 finalists at a reception April 16.

The event will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Design + Innovation area at Market Square & Suites, where the entries will be available for viewing throughout market week.

Criteria for the national competition, which was sponsored by the Educational Foundation of the International Furnishings & Design Association (IFDA) and open to undergraduate interior design students, required an essay, design challenge, floor plan, renderings, specifications and an original product drawing.
Yandow, of Salt Lake City, Utah, will receive his Associate of Applied Science Degree from LDS Business College this week. As the contest winner, he receives $5,000 and a weekend trip to the spring High Point Market.

The finalists include: Courtney Stark, Colleen Lettich, Lauren Graback and Kristen Hollard from High Point University; Trevor Call, Jennifer Giddens and Morgan Elizabeth Pederson from Utah State University; Mariel Ramos from Northern Arizona University; Gunnhildur Jardottier from New York School of Interior Design; and Alberto Rosario, Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC.

The goal of the competition was to expand the design horizons of students who typically are given contemporary assignments and class work, exposing them to the traditional-mix design projects they will encounter in the industry and with consumer clients.

The architectural details of Yandow’s design and original drawing of a chair suitable for manufacturing and marketing impressed the three judges: Raymond Waites and interior designers Jeanne Matlock and Merry Mabbett Dean, both members of IFDA’s Educational Foundation.
