JCPenney off-mall home departments setting the pace

Plano, Texas -- Based on the success of its off-the-mall stores that started in 2003, JCPenney will dramatically accelerate the opening of off-mall units through 2009.
In 2004 the company opened 4 new off-mall units. In 2006, the first year of more rapid development, JCPenney will open 27, vs. the original plan of 20. In 2007, 2008 and 2009, the retailer plans to open 50 each year.
In an interview after the analysts meeting, Mike Ullman, chairman and ceo said that "home is over-performing the balance of departments in the off-mall stores -- and is doing significantly better than the mall store home departments."
