Big Lots taps Garden Ridge exec

Columbus, OH — Big Lots has hired John Martin as executive vp, merchandising. He will report to chairman and ceo Michael Potter.
A 30-year retail veteran, Martin was previously president of Garden Ridge; president and coo of Michaels Stores; president of OfficeMax; and a divisional merchandise manager with Federated Department Stores' Gold Circle division. He began his career as a buyer with Dollar General.
"We've made significant progress in building our buying organization, dramatically improving our execution and better connecting the business with our customer," said Potter. "We are attracting the best and the brightest talent from within the retail industry."
