Hoyne leaves a legacy at Covington's Spectrum division

By Carole Sloan -- Home Textiles Today, 1/29/2001 12:00:00 AM

NEW YORK -Marjorie Hoyne, one of the decorative fabric industry's prime movers, is retiring as president and creative director of the Spectrum Fabrics division of Covington Inds., effective May 31.

With a career that began as a fabric editor for a major consumer publication, and through assignments in the fiber business, cut and sew manufacturing and lastly with Spectrum-first as senior vp and creative director when it was an independent company and later under the Covington aegis in her current position-Hoyne has brought a strong style sense to the mainstream.

When Spectrum was acquired by Covington in 1994, Hoyne became president while retaining her position as creative director.

Hoyne will continue to lead the design team of Spectrum in the "Spectrum Designers Collection" that will become part of Covington Fabrics, said Abby Gilmore, president and ceo of Covington Inds.

Said Hoyne, "This retirement attempt has been going on for six or seven months. I tried it a few times before but it never worked."

"Marjorie will work with the management team of Covington Fabrics to finalize the plans for this new program-to work with and expand the talented group of outside designers that Marjorie has assembled," said Gilmore.

Two of the headliners are established designers: Margarita Cushing and Jay Yang, who already have had collections under the Spectrum label. Other designers are being negotiated with, Hoyne said, and will be announced shortly.

Since Spectrum joined the Covington family, it has been the division that catered to the more decorative segments of the business, Gilmore said. "[Hoyne's] strength is at the higher end of the market but she never crosses the line"-beyond what the market can understand, Gilmore explained. "She never goes so far beyond the market that she leaves the market behind."

In their short relationship, Gilmore cited Hoyne's French provincial collection that revived a toile that is probably the leader in the market. "Her monkey print was right on time, and her florals are exceptional events when prints are down."

The challenge for Covington, Gilmore related, "was the combined talents of Marjorie-design leadership and presidential leadership. With her there was the cachet of a separate division."

But with the business side of the Spectrum division integrated into the Covington Fabrics division, and Hoyne's supervision and working with the Spectrum design team, "I feel it will stay quite distinct," Gilmore said.

From a management perspective, Tom Bruno, Spectrum's vp, sales, has been promoted to vp of sales for the Covington Fabrics division. Oscar Reig-Plaza continues as national sales manager of Covington Fabrics. Both report to Joe Mattera, president of Covington Fabrics.
