Spring Colors Trending Toward Sophistication

New York — Nighttime jasmine, carbs, dusk, iguana, clarity and orange crush are samples of Cotton Inc.'s forecast for its spring/summer 2005 apparel palette, which the company describes as more urbane compared with last year's inclination toward brights.

“This year, we're ready for something a bit more sophisticated and more complex colors balanced out with some neutrals,” said Lauren Deatherage, trend specialist, menswear fashion marketing, during Cotton Inc.'s presentation earlier this month at the Material World event in Miami Beach.

Six groupings of colors — each comprising six hues — make up the forecast.

Secretive, a transition of yellows to taupes that is accented with a lavender-like thistle, is intended for mercerized yarns, delicate prints and organza.

Playful comprises brown-based neutrals popped with a clown nose red, green slime and a soft teal called jawbreaker. It is geared toward basket-weave fabrics, canvas, seersucker, ginghams and rugby-like materials.

Tranquil is “a return to neutrals,” Deatherage said. Its blush tones and terracotta make it suitable for multiple markets — men's, women's and children's apparel fabrics, including light linens.

Alluring, a group of tropical and Zen-inspired hues, works best on knits and other fabrics that contour the body and create depth.

Introspective, architecturally inspired and sleek and urban in feeling, centers on dark grays and creams coupled with a deep purple and royal blue, perfect for denim-related looks, she said.

Activewear-inclined Fresh color collection is about citrus shades, aqua, white and a gray-blue.

For its spring/summer surface forecast, Cotton Inc. divvied up the trends into five groups.

Acquired Taste calls for luxury fabrics with rustic feels that evoke a city-meets-country look, Deatherage said. This includes ribbon effects, stitching detailing, ribbing details, knitwear, non-traditional plaids, tweed denims and intricate oxford shirting.

Virtual Nature, which centers on verdant nature shades and basket-weave looks, is suited for unusual printing techniques on fabrics, floating yarns, double-sided jacquards, cotton-and-linen blends, metallic accents, pin striping and tie-dye styles.

Recreation employs flamboyant colors and follow-the-leader prints and game board-inspired designs, like polka dots and stripes, retro themes, 3-D effects and boldly colored piques.

Ebb and Flow is intended for a resort-wear look, calling for knitwear, mesh and lace looks, sculpting effects, sheers and yarn-dyed fabrics with intricate embroideries.

Lost and Found looks are those that have lost their original appearance but found new meaning, Deatherage explained, such as hazy imagery, uncut floats, sheered and napped looks, glamorizing athletic styles with metallic looks and pearls.
