Washington – As many as 84.6 million American consumers plan to shop online today, up 17.5% from 72.0 million in 2007, according to a Shop.org survey conducted for the National Retail Federation.
“Many people who didn’t want to fight the crowds or get up early to stand in line over the weekend have been waiting until Cyber Monday to start their holiday shopping,” said Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org.
In a continuing trend, the survey found that 55.8% of workers with internet access, or 72.8 million people, will shop for holiday gifts from work. Three years ago, 44.7% said they shopped online from work.
The Shop.org results also showed that 83.7% of retailers will have a special promotion for Cyber Monday, up from 72.2% last year. About one-third will offer specific deals, while one-fourth offer one-day sales. More than one-fifth of retailers will offer free shipping on all purchases.
