Italian Mills to Shake up Design

Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 7/27/2009 12:00:00 AM

Moving away from the "norm," Italian fabric mills are promoting classic Italian fiber and fabric capabilities combined with innovations in fiber constructions, blends and decorative elements.

In a move designed to separate the Italian mills from the mass producers, Pier Luigi Loro Piana, president of Moda Unica, this month introduced four trend families for apparel that will debut at Milano Unica in September. Interestingly, many elements of these trends for winter 2010/2011 can be interpreted for the home market — especially the home textiles segment.

The exhibition's creative director, Angelo Uslenghi, showed mixes of classic looks with updates such as metallic glazes overlaying animal prints, metallic plating, uneven textured effects, digital and photographic techniques, paddings and waddings, and ribbons with boucle and other effects.

In addition to the fabrics, the exhibition also highlighted new directions in accessories, with trimmings and embellishments readily applicable to decorative bedding, windows, table linens and decorative pillows.

Some examples of the four themes are shown here.
