New York – Sales of Halloween merchandise helped push comps up for the fourth week in a row, the Johnson Redbook reported today.
The Johnson Redbook Retail Sales Index for the third week of October rose 0.7% compared to the sale week in 2008.
Department stores still reported aggregate negative comps, down 2.1%, but that was an improvement over the preceding week’s 2.9% drop in the channel.
As sales of costumes, candy and decorations rose over last year, discounter’s comps improved to 2.4% during the week ended Oct. 24, compared to a gain of 1.9% the prior week.
“Some discount stores and drug stores started to cut prices on Halloween-related merchandise earlier than usual to lure shoppers to other higher margin products,” said Catlin Levis, Redbook analyst.
Month-over-month, the index climbed 1.8%.
As October winds to a close this week, retailers are expecting last-minute shopping to pump Halloween sales further, said Levis. She noted that since Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, more people are expected to celebrate.
