Surtex honors the best, brightest

By Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 3/8/2004 12:00:00 AM

The winners of the Surtex 2004 International Student Design Competition have been selected from nearly 100 entrants representing 15 schools worldwide.

Winners of this year's competition, themed "Creative Collection," were chosen by a jury of professionals selected from the design industry and press.

First place went to Selina Rose, Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College, United Kingdom, for Confection Affection, which was "inspired by chocolate, confectionary, lingerie, gifts and all things girlie" as well as the "romance of the 1950s."

Surtex stated that Rose won for her integrated design approach, innovative imagery, tactile quality and diversity, and all-around eye for fashion, texture, pattern and color.

Rose will receive a $500 award and a trip to Surtex 2004 and a one-week design industry internship in New York City.

Second place went to Lydia Timken, Academy of Art College, San Francisco, Calif., for her Life Furnished, a collection of interior surface designs inspired by "earth, geometrics and Alexander Calder," with applications arising from the student's "love of comfort and modern design."

She will receive a $250 award.

Two entries tied for third place: Elena Lynn Triolo, Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, Ga., for The San Cristobal Collection, and Soroya Shah, Savannah College of Art and Design, Savannah, Ga., for Taking Flight.

Triolo's contemporary collection was inspired by the architectural colors and lines of the Mayan 'Painted Villages' of Mesoamerica, and is composed of patterns that can be used interchangeably on a variety of gift and stationery products.

Both Triolo and Shah will receive $150 awards.
