WPS, Parkdale ink deal for logo

Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 5/14/2001 12:00:00 AM

WASHINGTON — WestPoint Stevens and Parkdale Mills signed the first agreements to use the Egyptian Cotton Logo at a ceremony here last month.

The logo, which is owned by the Egyptian Ministry of Economy and Foreign Trade and Alexandria Cotton Exporters (Alcotexa), enhances the economic ties between Egypt and the United States, said Egypt's president Hosny Mubarak at the signing ceremony.

At the signing, Amin Abaza, chairman of Alcotexa, said that Alcotexa has formed a fibers promotions unit called CottonEgypt to support the logo. Dr. Youssef Boutros-Ghali, minister of economy and foreign trade, also represented the logo at the signing ceremonies.

Application processing is done over a website, CottonEgypt.org, with the applicant required to register a sponsor. The sponsor program is a tracking method that allows Cotton/Egypt to confirm that an applicant has bought Egyptian cotton either as raw cotton, yarns, fabrics or end products, in order to police the logo effectively.
