WestPoint Home downsizing HQ, closing plants

By Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 5/29/2007 1:01:00 PM

New York -- Hacking away at costs and winding down what's left of its U.S. bedding operations, WestPoint Home said it will close several domestic bedding plants by the end of August, resulting in the loss of about 1,000 jobs.

WestPoint had earlier shut down its U.S. bedding spinning and weaving operations, and now is shuttering virtually all of its U.S. bedding finishing.

Plants to be closed include the Abbeville fabrication plant, the Opelika finishing plant, the Marianna plant, Grifftex and Graphics, all located in Alabama, Florida and Georgia.

Pruning its white-collar ranks as well, the company said it is also eliminating about 40 jobs at its New York City headquarters and at outside sales offices "to properly position WestPoint Home for its new business model." Positions are being eliminated in sales and marketing, design, human resources, and finance.

WestPoint said the plant closing and downsizing will enable the major mill "to continue its strategy of global supply chain expansion to better compete in the world market."
