Wal-Mart Updates Logo, Opens 300th Canadian Unit

By Staff -- Home Textiles Today, 7/7/2008 12:00:00 AM

Wal-Mart last week unveiled its new logo, which offers a streamlined, single-word name, "Walmart," followed by a more evolved "squiggly."

The new logo is "part of an ongoing evolution" of its "overall brand — customers have already seen this in refreshed store signage and recent print advertisements and TV commercials," the company said in a prepared statement.

"This update to the logo is simply a reflection of the refresh taking place inside our stores and our renewed sense of purpose to help people save money so they can live better," the statement continued.

Storefronts will start to adopt the new logo this fall, the company said.

Meanwhile in Canada, Wal-Mart — or "Walmart" — opened its 300th store, this one in Mississauga, Ontario.

Walmart entered the country in 1994 by acquiring the 122-store Woolco chain. Canada's first three Wal-Mart "Supercentres" opened in Ontario in October 2006. There are currently 34 in three provinces — Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia.

"Fourteen years into our evolution," said Walmart Canada president and ceo David Cheesewright, "our new stores offer customers three times the selection we had in 1994, and we're more committed than ever to saving Canadians money so they can live better. In fact, this year is a record year for our famous 'Rollback' price cuts."
