ABC Closing Two Stores

By Carole Sloan -- Home Textiles Today, 11/7/2005 12:00:00 AM

New York — ABC Carpet and Home is closing its Brooklyn and Riverhead, N.Y., stores.

According to store employees, the Brooklyn store is scheduled to close at the end of this year, while the Riverhead store is planned for closing in January.

The terms of the leases ended, and the company has elected not to renew, said Andy Morris, Morris+King, ABC's public relations counsel.

The 40,000-square-foot store in Brooklyn opened in 2002 in the section of the borough called DUMBO — Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass — considered the SoHo section of New York for the 21st century. The Riverhead store opened in 2003.

At the time, the merchandise mix for the DUMBO store was programmed to be more contemporary, more colorful than its siblings, said Evan Cole, then CEO of the company.

ABC Carpet & Home had estimated total sales of about $200 million in 2004, according to Home Textiles Today.
