The Vision of Cotton

By Carole Sloan -- Home Textiles Today, 6/20/2005 12:00:00 AM

New York — Toned down brights with a white glaze create a casually elegant mood in Simple Pleasures, one of six color palettes and fabric directions featured by Cotton Inc. in its Home Fabrics Color and Trend Forecasting 2007.

In a preview last week, Dana Poor, trend forecaster, home, Cotton, described Simple Pleasures as “a delicate balance of modernity and comfort.”

Colors include sherbet, sapphire — a true navy — and buttercream, all with an opacity of color and light, Poor remarked. Sheers reflect the lightness element, and simplicity combined with fun patterns is an important element in the fabrics. Three new reds are featured across the palettes. Ember — a rust red — is a feature in New Traditions.

Archival prints and multi-cultural influences are key design inspirations for this traditional mood. Simplified damasks and tweeds are part of the elimination of excess in design.

Serenity marks a return to neutrals after several years of a bright-dominated palette, Poor said. These neutrals lean toward grayed tones and are combined with brights.

The other palettes and fabrics include Nightlife — pegged to the teen market with geometric designs the major element, with pinks and purples the “fiery” shades among the cool colors.

Branching Out is home to botanicals with designs moving beyond blooms to the entire plant, Poor said. Farmers Market embraces hand-crafted fabrics such as crochet, applique and novelty prints. Timeless is a key word here, Poor related. Farmers Market also features the other two red introductions — Radish and Fresh Berry.
