JCPenney grand opens Manhattan store

New York – The window department has proven to be one of the strongest businesses in domestics during the soft opening period at JCPenney’s new Manhattan store, home evp Jeff Allison said during the store’s grand opening this morning.
“We’re very excited about the window business. Between the ready-made and the custom, we’re going to give the customer something she can’t find in Manhattan,” he said.
JCPenney worked to create fixturing that could maximize product presentations less square footage. It also eliminated some categories from the floor, including decorative accessories, frames, lighting and furniture.
For those items, customers are directed to the Find More interactive flat screen panel, which contains the full assortment of home products sold online. Find More began testing in four Dallas stores in May; this is the first unit outside that test. “We’re seeing some fairly good signs of online volume,” said Allison.
Penney’s opening this morning was headlined by New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who lauded the 500 jobs the store brings to the city. JCPenney chairman and ceo Mike Ullman in his opening remarks said the store is “designed for speed of transaction for a customers who are always in a hurry.”
